To celebrate twenty years of Monday Night Raw, WWE home video have compiled and released the hundred most memorable moments in the show’s history. This set is of the type that I just adore, the type you can dip in and out of, or watch with your mates with a drink and a pizza. It’s a lot of fun and is presented as such.
This is literally just 100 moments in a playlist with talking heads or the participants of the ‘moment’ speaking about their memory of it. Everyone is having a blast and there are the parts you expected to appear (like DX parodying the Nation and Stone Cold’s Beer Truck) as well as some you perhaps forgot about or didn’t think would make it.
The third disc contains the historical 1000th episode of Raw which is a nice collectors piece which stands up on re-watch. The menus allow you to skip to every moment individually with a description as the chapter marker so if you are looking for one particular clip, they are easy to find.
The people they have asked to speak on each piece are obviously enjoying the nostalgia and having a great time reliving it with you. Jerry Lawler is as enthusiastic as a puppy, especially on the clips that feature some of Raw’s more risqué moments.
Raw is WWE’s flagship show and for their milestone they have pulled out all the stops to remind us why we tune in every week. It’s a welcome trip down memory lane and the enjoyment of these discs multiplies with every extra person you can watch it with.
The old clips look nice but are shown in their original 4:3 aspect but WWE do a good job of keeping the borders from being intrusive, any newer content is shown in it’s 16:9 ratio and the newest clips are HD. It’s not jarring to go from 1999 to 2007 as everything looks clear and crisp. I’ve included screenshots of each style to show you how well they have masked the transitions from one film type to the next.
All in all I can’t really imagine a WWE fan who wouldn’t love this set. It’s obviously been compiled by people who know and love the product and I don’t think anyone will argue with the #1 pick. The added bonus of the full 3hr special to celebrate 1000 episodes is a most welcome and gracious extra and it already sits as a historical piece in it’s own right.
There’s nothing I can even complain about here, this will feature nicely as a companion piece to the Attitude Era DVD Set as a teary-eyed look at a past time.
